[ Session Name ] Trackers are creepy: What they know about you, and how you can fight back [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Bianca Danforth [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mozilla [ Submitter's Github ] @biancadanforth

[ Additional facilitators ] Princiya Sequeira

What will happen in your session?

Participants will learn through interactive activities about web privacy.

Part 1: We take several volunteers with one person as the trackee and everyone else as the tracker and make the analogy of online tracking as similar to being followed in real life.

Part 2: We pass around giant cards with fake ads that use embarrassing topics that trackers might know you have looked up.

Part 3: We ask people about common online searches and show the Lightbeam graph for the most popular related websites.

Part 4: We talk about what we are doing and what others can do to be a part of the online privacy/security movement.

Part 5: We have a Q&A with the audience.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We want people to be more aware of the risks that they take when browsing online and what they can do to protect themselves.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We would ask that you provide:

This proposal is related to another proposal by my co-presenter, Princiya Sequeira. If both are accepted, it would be very helpful if you co-located these sessions.

Time needed

less than 60 mins

Hi @biancadanforth your proposal has advanced through to the next phase of the selection process by the Privacy and Security wrangler team!! Whoop whoop!

We now need clarity on the stipends, however. Could you please reach out to your team manager ASAP to see if they are able to cover your travel and accommodation needs?

Hi @bunnybooboo , thank you! In case it makes a difference, I am an intern at Mozilla until August 31. I have asked my mentor about this, and will let you know as soon as I hear back.

pauljt commented 7 years ago

@bunnybooboo I'm Bianca's mentor - as Bianca said, she in an intern as part of the Outreachy program. When Bianca applied for MozFest it was under the assumption that she would need MozFest to cover travel as she would be back to being just a volunteer by that stage.

Hey @biancadanforth we discussed your proposal at length. Ultimately, we've been unable to take this idea through to our final Privacy and Security schedule. It was so good, it was one that we marked as Outstanding, and after making it through FIVE deliberation phases we absolutely mean it.

Thank you for taking the creative time to send such a brilliant proposal to us. To see people like you switched on to an issue like Privacy and Security is a true delight to see in our network. And thanks for your patience through what was quite a rigorous selection process.

Okay no problem, thank you for considering me. :)

mozfest-bot commented 7 years ago

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.

@biancadanforth have another deadline this time for the materials request. Please check the above list of items and confirm this is correct, or let me know of any changes. I need this info by Thursday October 12 @ 17:00 UTC.

@bunnybooboo , thanks for following up! Additional materials requested after attending the Facilitator coaching meeting:

gotcha p.s. only keynotes have amplification - all sessions are commanded by your 'drama voice' alone ;)

Update with the tracking piece off the back of our conversation earlier- on the poster advertising the person you are tracking - can it contain the line " this activity is taking place with this persons consent" -

bunnybooboo commented 7 years ago

some additional visual cue might be helpful also @jonathanKingston - something like a big badge or rosette? e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Come-Darkside-Cookies-Large-Badge/dp/B01LR83VCM/

@Saallen , What conversation earlier? I don't think I was a part of that conversation -- are you referring to Part I of the activity?

biancadanforth commented 7 years ago

I have updated the agenda for my activity; here's a new summary:

Participants will learn through interactive activities about web privacy.

bunnybooboo commented 7 years ago

Please be very careful of everyone introducing themselves. I've sat in on sessions before where this has ended up taking 20+ mins of an hour long session.

bunnybooboo commented 7 years ago

@biancadanforth Jonathan has an additional tracking activity in mind for an attendee who volunteers themselves. He's likely to use your session as an introduction to the concepts, then a self selected person will be (offline) tracked through Mozfest. Details to follow,
