Hi @dxnn, thank you for submitting this proposal. I also see you and co-facilitators submitted another session around the same topic (https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/mozfest-program-2017/issues/259), and that one looked like more participatory. Could you explain how the two sessions are different, and how you expect to get participants involved in this session? Thanks
Hi @arroway! #259 is a proposal for a zine that will act as a resource for this session. The zine is a static document so won't be participatory, whereas this session will surface specific consent-related concerns of participants' various projects, as well strategies that they might already be implementing around consent. The hope is that after we provide a framework for consentful tech, participants will get involved in outlining specific techniques and features. Sorry for any confusion!
Thanks for the additional explanation @unalee !
Privacy and Security have decided to not take this particular proposal @dxnn. I'm unlocking the milestone so others can now freely consider it.
youth zone like the content of this session, would you consider making this youth centric and participatory - as it can help raise social awareness to young people?
Adding MozFest session Milestone as under review from main production team
What we capture in this session will be used as further content in #259

What will happen in your session?
Modern technology allows people to communicate, share, and connect in profound new ways, but also exposes us to new risks too. As web makers, how can we provide those benefits while mitigating the risks? Consent culture, participatory design, community-focused functionality and cryptographic techniques point toward answers.
We’ll explore the process of designing systems and its connection to those risks. We know the consequences of building business products in isolation, but communication platforms are often created that way. This leads to shipping features that actively cause harm to users. We’ll discuss this predicament, share stories, dig in to causes, and look for solutions.
This proposal relies on Building Consentful Tech Zine to walk people through notions of consent: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1d9VgLD29kaNj-ux8RTDwWDiTcvwdRgsRXpEDpxzHfn4/edit#heading=h.ycv3f9cdo0pw (please request access)
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
To highlight various ways people are negatively impacted by social technology and discuss techniques for building consentful technology that prioritizes people’s right to make self- determined choices about risk and harm. Participants should leave with a basic understanding of consent culture, participatory design, and risk-mitigating implementation techniques, and how to use those in their applications. We hope to expand the conversation and to leave everyone with some food for thought for ways in which community and consent can start becoming foundational to building technology. The point is that we all have a stake to play in the path towards consentful web and tech!
