[ Session Name ] Web Zero to Web Hero - 3 stage digital literacy model for kids/youth/adults [ Primary Space ] Web Literacy [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Gauthamraj Elango

What will happen in your session?

During the session, I will walk through participants with "3 Stage Digital Literacy Model" that I have personally developed and currently working on with a regional level initiative. So far we trained over 300 students from under-priviledged community with this model. First stage covers, "Basics of Digital devices" that includes the computer, smartphone, tablets, etc., Second stage covers, "Basic digital skills to master the web" that includes email, search engine, browser, etc explained with real time examples for better and easier understanding along with a live demo. The third stage covers the introduction to Raspberry pi, Html and scratch programming. Learn more about 3 stage model here - https://goo.gl/XeERWj

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants will gain basics of all digital devices - way it works, common aspects and differences among them. Participants able to effectively use newly gained digital skills - search engine, email, browsers, etc to find answers to their unknowns and critically evaluate the same for credibility. Participants learn to use Raspberry Pi, to create their first website using thimble and application using scratch - this develop their 21-st century skills and to take control of their life on the internet. Session will justify that English language barrier doesn't stop someone from effective use of internet. The gap between skills, qualification and opportunity can be addressed with digital skills. This video explain outcome from 3 stage model so far - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zidhKw6dGIc

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Will require projector and couple of monitors to connect Raspberry pi. If monitors are not possible couple of laptops will also serve the purpose through remote desktop. I am open to run this model as a exhibit or as drop-in session through out the weekend.

Hi @gautha91! Thank you for your proposal! I wanted to ask if the travel stipend is necessary for you to be able to attend Mozfest or if you'd be able to attend without one?

Thank you for all the information you've provided! I look forward to reviewing it all.

Hello @gautha91! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks a lot for the session outline @gautha91

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@gautha91 - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

@flukeout Thanks for the update. Yes, I am comfortable with the given date and time for my session.

Hello @gautha91 - I'm writing to see if you'd be interested in helping out with the Thimble Zone. I'm trying to organize a few folks with HTML, CSS & JS skills who would like to demo mozilla's Thimble Editor. We'll have a few laptops set up with a sign and it would be great if we had a few volunteers to introduce people to it as well as get them started on some kind of beginner-friendly projects (or any ideas you may have).

If you're interested, let me know, and please also jump into the Etherpad and add your name and interest. I've also started a #thimble-zone channel in the Mozfest slack. Let me know if you have any questions!
