[ Session Name ] Can we learn science by making things from household stuff? [ Primary Space ] Open Innovation [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion
[ Submitter's Name ] Kshitiz Khanal [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Open Knowledge Nepal [ Submitter's Github ] @kshitizkhanal7
What will happen in your session?
I will start by sharing some stories and cases on state of the art and innovative practices in Open Science Education (15 minutes), focusing on maker based curriculum. Trial of maker based science education with an Aerogami https://github.com/kshitizkhanal7/Aerogami workshop (45 minutes) will follow, to help the participants see for themselves if learning science by making things with household stuff is effective. Sharing experience of Aerogami workshop and feedback for improving will take the next 10 minutes. I will conclude with Discussion / Brainstorming on Open Science Education - problems, practices, personal experience and way forward focusing on maker based science education (20 minutes).
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
The session aspires to contribute in democratizing science education by inspiring participants to see how learning science can be fun and meaningful; and might be possible with household stuff. Hopefully, when session ends, participants will realize they can learn science as complex as aerodynamics by making paper planes.
The (relatively) tangible outcomes:
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
Projector, Screen, Microphone are basic requirements. I will bring lots of origami papers and household stuff.
