What will happen in your session?

We invite participants from all backgrounds and geographies, especially useful if an Academic background (past or present). Through a roundtable setting, we will lead the discussion across several relevant topics, where we ask loosely: how can we create a grassroots online space to build an Open Academia for all?

Specifically, how to ensure: 1) Gender, ethnic and LGBTQ equal opportunity ? 2) Compatibility with personal life balance (right to a living wage, healthcare, parental leave) 3) Fairness in job negotiations (e.g. salary, funding, benefits etc) 4) Academics will be a part of the change and are willing and able to share relevant information and build a global online community in an open platform setting (e.g. ensure honest and holistic participation, adherence, identity privacy needs etc)

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This session will have two main goals: 1) to create awareness for the rights of Academics to professional information and transparency across all levels, 2) to harness important points of exploration to be mapped onto an open online platform designed to give Academics a voice and a safe space for information sharing (ie, jobTalk, an ongoing project stemming from Mozilla Open Leadership Program 2017).

Hi!

Thank you for your note. We are excited to have submitted and potentially participate in Mozfest 2017 with this discussion - we have academic backgrounds and this is a topic we are passionate about.

Currently, there exists no centralized place for direct discussions of these matters. Existing online platforms like Glassdoors are not tailored to the specific needs of academics and are not suitable for the kinds of discussions that need to be had. Groups like the Future of Research ( http://futureofresearch.org/) focus on much needed changes in the scientific method but do not directly address working conditions of scientists and trainees. Our aim with the project is to start conversations that directly empower scientists by information sharing and open communication to give them more leverage in workplace dynamics.

Interactivity would be a key feature of this workshop. We'd aim to engage audience participation to facilitate discussions amongst academics and tech professionals across all levels.

@aromartins I'm seeking clarity on your stipend request. Your proposal has made it through to the next phase of consideration by the Digital Inclusion wrangler team. Unfortunately though, we've got way more seeking stipends than we have access to. If we were unable to give you access to a stipend, might you have other means available to you to make it to Mozfest?

@aromartins Thank you for quick response and providing clarity. Unfortunately we can not provide partial stipends. The Digital Inclusion Team will be in touch shortly with final curation and stipend decisions.

Hello again, I am tentative on being able to take a vacation day on Monday 30th October to accommodate travel and should hear from employer on this matter by tomorrow. I also notice that the tickets cost ~45pounds - am I right to assume we will get free admission ? If so, would it be possible to get one extra ticket for my wife who will be traveling w me?

@aromartins I'm finding your responses very hard to follow. Can you conduct the session by yourself and have your other facilitators participate remotely? We only have 1 travel stipend. We can figure out the other logistics later. Please confirm within 30mins or this stipend will be reallocated.

@aromartins Hello Ana, we've reallocated the stipend to another session. We also realized that you would be unable to attend the session facilitators meeting scheduled for Friday morning, Oct 27th. Thank you for submitting a fantastic proposal. I'll be removing the milestone.

Hi Kenyatta - the issue I was trying to make clear was that the session would not work with only one moderator present and we were determining the feasibility of the others self funding which is why it took a bit of time. Once that was established, we were working on setting up logistics. I was not aware of such a tight deadline for a decision, but in any case thank you for your time spent in this process.
