What will happen in your session?
The E.A.K. Mini Game Jam session will introduce children aged 8-14 to creative coding and computational thinking in the context of interactive storytelling and game design. For the first 30 minutes, participants will be given access to the full version of E.A.K. and will be introduced to the basics of HTML via story-driven gameplay. For the remaining 30 minutes, we will discuss several key aspects of the game design process, such as the story, game mechanics and character design, and participants will work together in groups of 2-3, to brainstorm ideas for games.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
At the end of the workshop, participants will feel inspired to use interactivity in media and learn more about the creative potential of computing. They will have looked at a number of different methods of interactive storytelling and game design, and will be familiar with the basics of programming using syntax. We aim to inspire young children, particularly girls, to want to learn more about coding, in a creative 'real-world' context, since there is currently far more of a focus on computational thinking, for this age-group.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
We would require paper and coloured pens, and also 8-10 laptops/chargers if possible!
(we have two machines available and trying to secure at least eight more)
Time needed
60 mins
