[ Session Name ] Digital Braves - using Drama to explore digital issues of identity, creativity and privacy in our society's future. [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Mick Chesterman [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Floss Manuals / Manchester Met University [ Submitter's Github ] @mickfuzz

[ Additional facilitators ] Alison Ramsey,Becky Patterson

What will happen in your session?

We will set up a drama where participants become involved in a scenario of increased automation and information surveillance. The drama is based around “The Network” a technocratic world 20 minutes into the future.

Participants learn about this world by becoming involved in an interactive process to screen them for their preferences and divide them accordingly into two separate teams (Creatives or Consumers) based on their resulting personality attributes.

Teams are then given role play missions to complete which involves cracking a code and altering the messages contained in the fabric of the Network’s communication structure. The final mission is to remix a Mozilla Thimble project to create their own advert to support or subvert the system.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

One goal is to give participants hands on experience of coding HTML and creating their own web pages as a means of self-expression and empowerment by hands of use of digital technology. We use and promote Mozilla’s Thimble tool to do this.

However, the primary goal is to explore issues of privacy in an accessible way also involving the emotional participation of the people taking part. We are applying the techniques pioneered by Drama specialist Dorothy Heathcote known as ‘Mantle of the Expert’ to the area of digital rights and learning to code. The immersive drama we have designed brings participants into a fictional ‘brotherhood of ideas’ making concrete some of the more abstract concepts of digital security and profiling.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

@mickfuzz this sounds really interesting

mickfuzz commented 6 years ago

Thanks @EPIKhub - I had a really hard time classifying this one. Perhaps it would work best in the Youth Zone? Here are some photos of a recent session the team did using the same "mantle of the expert" / process drama approach. http://digitalducks.org/piratepetes/free-membership-day-at-the-arcade-july-2017/

@mickfuzz please be aware your email is pinging an out of office response from June 😉

mickfuzz commented 6 years ago

@bunnybooboo thanks for the heads up! That's sorted now. We are looking forward to this. Just had a great chat with @chrisdavidmills today about this and related tings, I wonder if he'll make this session.

chrisdavidmills commented 6 years ago

I do hope so; sounds like a really compelling learning experience!

Hi there, just checking in to say that all three facilitators me Mick Chesterman, Alison Ramsey and Rebecca Patterson can all still make it.

In terms of equipment we just need a screen /projecto with a VGA input

bunnybooboo commented 6 years ago

Ace, thanks @mickfuzz! Could you please send me their email addresses, in an email, to ensure their attendance is added in our booking system?

bunnybooboo commented 6 years ago

@mickfuzz thanks for sending those contact details in email. I can now confirm those additional 2 names have been added, along with yours, for ticketing. Getting close now!

hi there, I've just noticed the change of time. one of our facilitators is coming in from the airport and won't be able to make this earlier time. Is there a chance of it being moved back? Let me know if not and we'll replan the session. thanks Mick

mickfuzz commented 6 years ago

I also notice we are down for 1.30 instead of the one hour originally scheduled. We met up to reschedule our session to bring it down to one hour! This may not be a problem however. I'll get in touch with the team. Hope you are enjoying london.

bunnybooboo commented 6 years ago

This can absolutely be brought down to 60 mins

mickfuzz commented 6 years ago

@bunnybooboo actually after talking to the team they are keen for it to be 1.30 I'm sorry about the wobble on that. Also I just want to really thank you for going the extra mile with us on scheduling it's really appreciated :)

bunnybooboo commented 6 years ago

@mickfuzz That's really great actually, as those 1.30 slots on the schedule are quite precious. We'd rather see them utilised to their capacity. And thanks so much for saying that. It's my priority to fix as many issues as humanly possible through collective flexibility. Mozfest is usually pretty chaotic so our purposeful adaption to what goes down is probably a coping mechanism hahaha.

Really looking forward to meeting in person. Please push comms as much as possible into Slack from here on in. It was just by chance I caught this.
