[ Session Name ] Inkscape and Lasercutting - come make some jewellery or a keyring. [ Primary Space ] Youth Zone [ Secondary Space ] Open Innovation

[ Submitter's Name ] Amy Mather

[ Submitter's Github ] @MiniGirlGeek

What will happen in your session?

Participants will be learning how to use Inkscape (open source design program) to create a geeky jewellery / keyring design. Other options include coasters etc.

I will then be able to fabricate it on the lasercutter using acrylic or plywood.

They can then come back at the end of the day to finish it off by attaching a chain, keyring or magnet etc.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Will encourage people to find out more about how they can create their own things, and shows them the sorts of things they can make at their local hack/makespace and how they can use open source software to create their designs. Making more mini makers :D

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Requires, plywood, acrylic, necklace chains, jump rings and pliers etc. However youthzone already owns these materials as it didn't all get used last year. I think we need to order some more keyrings though.

I will require access to the lasercutter upstairs at ravensbourne, the participants will need access to computers with inkscape on - last year we had PiTops in the protyping space but we could be located anywhere. I will also require a big screen to show a presentation on with demos of inkscape.

Time needed

90 mins

@emrysgreen - Another of our youth for you, Amy ran workshops on the 9th floor last year with some awesome lazer cutting creative arty makes in the Prototyping Lab

emrysgreen commented 6 years ago

Excellent - thanks. Are you connected with an Arts Award Centre at all @MiniGirlGeek also? (www.artsawardvoice.com for info)

EPIKhub commented 6 years ago

@emrysgreen - this session physically takes place on the 9th floor - so not "In" the youth zone second floor space

EPIKhub commented 6 years ago

@emrysgreen no she is not as far as I know; Amy is part of our Pi family

emrysgreen commented 6 years ago

No problem at all. One thing we're looking at @EPIKhub is also how we might offer to support young people running sessions who are not yet doing Arts Award but who are doing directly relevant activities who might like the support to do Arts Award as an additional benefit. Ofcourse it won't all happen on the day though.

Hi @phillipadsmith and team. Is this something that Open Innovation would like to bill in their programme too as part of the youth led track? It will physically happen on the 9th Floor so wouldn't actually take your floor space - not sure how far away it will be @Saallen ?

Saallen commented 6 years ago

Sessions are not tied to physical space or floors- so an OPen innovation session can happen anywhere 🗺

emrysgreen commented 6 years ago

Awesome thanks @Saallen

emrysgreen commented 6 years ago

Hi @EPIKhub you've accepted this as a session. Will it also run in the youth zone as well as in Open Innovation under the youth led track?

gbaman commented 6 years ago

This session is accepted under YouthZone (and using YouthZone consumables). More than happy though to work with other spaces (like Open Innovation) on it, but the session will only be running a maximum of twice over the weekend (may only run once though) as Amy is running more than just this one in the festival.

I am managing this one, so happy to take any other questions related to it @emrysgreen :)

natalia44 commented 6 years ago

@emrysgreen @gbaman do you need anything regarding curation of this session from Open Innovation team? We're happy to help, but don't want to double communication etc.

natalia44 commented 6 years ago

@gbaman decided to move it to YouthZone, sounds good for Open Innovation team;)

gbaman commented 6 years ago

Thanks @natalia44.

For reference, note this session will be running in the Prototyping Lab on the 9th floor like last year, not in the actual YouthZone. This is so it has access to the Ravensbourne Lasercutters.

Hi guys,

This session has been allocated as an Open Innovation session within the Youth Led Theme. As we've already started promoting said curation and as discussed at the retreat, trying to encourage and promote sessions to 'break out' in to the festival I'd appreciate it if we could keep to said plan?
