What will happen in your session?
In this workshop, participants will explore how we can use the internet to create alternatives to our global mass manufacturing system.
We will look at how the future of manufacturing relates to the environment, craft, internet of things, repair, the economy and the nature of work - collectively working out what we can do as citizens to ensure this moves in a healthy direction.
After demonstrations of recent projects by Make Works, workshop participants will be introduced to the organisation's techniques in mapping, collecting and share data about manufacturers in their own geographical area. We’ll then move on to exploring ways that participants can start using the Make Works API to develop their own tools for distributed manufacturing.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
It can feel feel impossible as both citizens and consumers to have any real say in the way in how, who and where our electronic devices, clothing, homewares and other everyday objects are manufactured. What will happen if only a few corporations own our means of production? Why are we not given the ability to fix, repair or even access key components? What does that look like when these products are connected to the internet?
The goal of this session is to demonstrate the relevance of local production, and give participants additional internet tools that will allow them to take ownership of how and where the objects they use are made.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
