Open mozfest-bot opened 7 years ago

mozfest-bot commented 7 years ago

[ UUID ] 45474d85-c0c4-4345-9420-646a17828513

[ Session Name ] The Very Hungry Code-a-pillar: coding with under 5s [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Amy Hearn [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Kirklees Libraries [ Submitter's Github ] @amyhearn

[ Additional facilitators ] Krystal Vittles (Suffolk Libraries)

What will happen in your session?

In this practical session we will discuss the importance of introducing children to the basics of coding, discover some of the ways public libraries are helping under 5s develop the skills needed for coding, and get hands on with some of the coding toys and games available for toddlers. Taking an action learning approach, participants will take a critical look at some of the ways public libraries have embedded the foundations of coding into story times and nursery visits, and help libraries develop and improve our under 5s coding offer.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants will leave this session with practical ideas of how to introduce toddlers to simple concepts like sequencing, critical thinking, and problem solving. They will understand the importance of helping young people develop essential coding skills from an early age and be given the skills needed to equip children in this way. Presenters will discover ways to develop and improve their under 5s coding offer.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Nothing additional. Presenters will bring a range of toys and resources aimed at under 5s.

Time needed

60 mins

@emrysgreen while not strictly a youth led session, might be interesting to you and @ArtsAward

ArtsAward commented 7 years ago

@emrysgreen would be great if Kirklees Libraries could consider a youth facilitator to work with them on this in the youth track?

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Yes if they could would be great!

The original idea was aimed at people working with or interested in working with under 5s but I'd be happy to adapt better fit the festival - how might we go about working with a youth facilitator?

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Hi Amy,

Does your library work with a young peoples panel at all? I'd be happy to connect with yourself and a young person to help you with designing a co-facilitated session still aimed at your intended audience?

Ah I see! Sorry I thought it might be a case of linking with a young person already involved in Moz Fest. As this is my first time submitting a proposal and only my second visit to the festival I don't feel confident enough to recruit a young person locally to work with me and Krystal on this. However, if anyone knows a roughly Huddersfield based young person already involved in Moz Fest, I'd be happy to connect!

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Hi @amyhearn - may not be able to recruit ourselves from Huddersfield area but @EPIKhub may know if one of her young team are based in the vicinity?

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@amyhearn @emrysgreen we do have a crech at MozFest full of under 5's cc/ @Saallen

amyhearn commented 7 years ago

Oh I didn't know that @EPIKhub! It would be great actually get some littlies involved!

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@amyhearn the crech is on the 2nd floor in the youth zone, they mainly take under 5's of staff, volunteers and session leaders; this might indeed be a nice thing for them @Saallen any thought on this would the crech folks be up for this do you think?

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Keep us posted on if this might fit within the Youth Zone / cretch (I'm not sure what that is haha). We are also considering it within the Web Lit space but would probably give priority to that first @EPIKhub

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@flukeout if you think this could work in the creche (MozFest children nursary for the 5 and unders) you need to talk to @Saallen to see if the nursary staff will allow this to happen in their room that is allocated to them within the youth zone each year

Saallen commented 7 years ago

Hello 👋 We cannot host any sessions in the creche or pull participants from the creche for a session- it is a separate entity from the program

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Hiya @EPIKhub - this is an Arts Award Centre, is it one that could be considered for the Youth Zone? Or if it's being considered in the Web Lit Space @flukeout ?

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@emrysgreen Its Web lits

edovio commented 7 years ago

Hello @amyhearn - We are very happy to announce you that we have decided to accept your session at the festival this year! Congratulations! 🎉

amyhearn commented 7 years ago

Wooooo thanks! Super exciting!

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

I just added the web lit milestone for you @edovio - hope that's ok

amyhearn commented 7 years ago

Confirming our presence!

edovio commented 7 years ago

Hello @amyhearn, Thanks for your confirmation! :)

jonathanprozzi commented 7 years ago

Hello @amyhearn! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to the issue with an outline of the topics or activities for your session. You don’t need to send your slidedeck to us, but if you could please reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and time estimates for your session that would be great. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

edovio commented 7 years ago

Dear Facilitators, we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Hey @amyhearn - have you had a chance to think about a rough session outline? Would be great to have a breakdown of activities and rough time estimates for each. Thanks again!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Hello @amyhearn, we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

edovio commented 7 years ago

Hello @amyhearn , I need to ask you to give me the Email contact of all the additional Facilitators in your Session. You can send me by Email at the address: edovio@mozillaitalia.org. Thanks you & see you at the MozFest!!!

amyhearn commented 7 years ago

Hi @flukeout sorry I've not sent this information through yet!

Session outline: 60 mins 10 mins - introductions (facilitators and workshop attendees) 5 mins - explanation of computational thinking, the basic key skills we can help toddlers develop, and the need to embed these foundations. 5 mins - introduction to key coding toys for under 5s (code-a-pillar, beebot, cubetto) and the skills they teach 10 mins - demonstration of how coding toys and other resources could be used in a storytime to introduce computational thinking (The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Giant Jam Sandwich, The Animal Bop) 15 mins - group play - how could computational thinking be introduced in your setting? What are the barriers and how could you overcome them? 10 mins - ideas share 5 mins - questions

I hope this is ok - let me know if you need more!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Great, thanks very much @amyhearn!
