What will happen in your session?

In our installation, we are using oral storytelling as the medium by which learners can acquire digital skills to produce works independently, and a model for educators to use authentic material in teaching and motivating learners. These narratives empower the self in sharing experiences, connecting to others, and building community; they help us learn from one another. Our set up is a drop-in (day 1) for participants to answer a series of prompts in the form of a short oral narrative; we will direct participants to open-source technologies for recording and editing their narratives and sharing them in a collaborative online platform. On days 2/3, we will set-up an open space to share reactions using a free polling platform.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

• Develop digital and technology literacy in a global sphere
• Empower participants of all ages to share their personal narratives: their dreams, challenges, motivations; what is their imagined future? What do they need to achieve it?
• Promote a healthier internet through honesty and vulnerability
• Get acquainted with open-source technologies useful for original content production and assessment—WavePad, SoundCloud, Mentimeter—in teaching and learning
• Assess the effects of first-person digital oral storytelling
• Produce an oral narrative in simple steps and free tech; a process that can be replicated in other spaces and for different purposes
• Use collection of oral narratives as a form of ethnographic research to understand the needs for resources, access, mentorship, others

Participants bring smartphones/tablets and headphones

From event organizers:

• Big screen with speakers connected to laptop or iPad with internet access to stream sound from SoundCloud, and display poll results
• Photocopies of 4-page toolkit

Good to have: one or two tablets, as an option for participants to use, in case they don't have smartphones/tablets

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

@gigipolo I'm seeking clarity on your stipend request. Your proposal has made it through to the next phase of consideration by the Digital Inclusion wrangler team. Unfortunately though, we've got way more seeking stipends than we have access to. If we were unable to give you access to a stipend, might you have other means available to you to make it to Mozfest? If you would like we can also have this conversation via email.
