[ Session Name ] Smart Tech Growth: social responsibility in transitioning tech economies [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Craig Wiroll [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mozilla Foundation [ Submitter's Github ] @Wiroll

[ Additional facilitators ] Mark Davis?

What will happen in your session?

Using the lens of "smart growth" for cities from a planning perspective, what are the responsibilities of the curators of the technology in the development of a changing community?

We will discuss what it means for a community to adapt from a non-tech economy and the outlying variables to consider such as:

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

To get people thinking about how their organizations fit into their local communities.

To create actionable steps to assessing how the tech industry affects the greater overall economy and contributes to negative access to resources - and how to replenish the community resources that are exhausted by high-wage tech careers.

To establish community-specific Corporate Social Responsibility guidelines - and be able to create a cooperative community mindset around those guidelines.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

An easel or somewhere to hang a poster. Post-it (brand name) notes so that the MozFest community and contribute ideas in an analog way.

Time needed

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

Would community members from impacted sessions be involved in this conversation/session? I'm afraid this could be replicating what is identified as the challenge if this is not shown in practice. Are you working community based orgs or members to present this content?

Wiroll commented 7 years ago

By "impacted sessions" do you mean communities with a high influx of technology jobs?

I think the interactivity of the poster would be used more to gather crowdsourced information about the subject. The information on the poster would show previous studies/stats/facts but wouldn't be making any conclusions or absolute recommendations - I don't think anyone has the perfect answer at this point - but making more new companies think about their impact on local ecosystems and establishing internal programming/guidelines related to it would be the goal at this point.

Sorry if I misunderstood.

Whoops. Yes, I meant impacted communities. Thanks for the clarification.

Unfortunately we didn't think this session was quite right for the Digital Inclusion space this year. I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

sedgwickkm commented 7 years ago

@cubicgarden this may be something which could be discussed in decentralization?

cubicgarden commented 7 years ago

Sorry its not quite right for Decentralization. thanks

It seems like this is universally a terrible idea - but I think having an interactive (analog or digital) board, with the preface of "What is your tech community doing to promote smart, equitable, and inclusive growth?" with a few prompts and visual mapping could make for some interesting dialogue. Something like that may very well already be planned.

Hi @Wiroll We think this could be interesting. We will have space at the venue that you can schedule a session that sits outside the spaces. If you are happy to have your installation, running all weekend and schedule a time for the dialogue we would be happy to cater for it
