[ Session Name ] Host your data on the peer to peer web with Dat [ Primary Space ] Decentralization [ Secondary Space ] Open Innovation

[ Submitter's Name ] Danielle Robinson [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mozilla Science / Code for Science & Society [ Submitter's Github ] @daniellecrobinson

[ Additional facilitators ] Bruno Vieira,Max Ogden

What will happen in your session?

We will lead a beginner friendly tutorial on hosting a simple website from a personal computer and making it available over the peer to peer web using Dat. Participants will build a basic website and install Dat software on their machine in order to host it. They will then have another participant load their page and store it offline, demonstrating Dat’s P2P nature.

For advanced users, participants will learn how to access and import scientific datasets using the Dat protocol. As the main example, session leader Bruno Vieira will use his expertise as a bioinformaticist to use Dat to load datasets into analysis using Bionode, which can be easily installed on participants computers using Node.js.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Our goals are to create a fun and welcoming environment for people at all levels to have fun with decentralized technology. More advanced users can explore the potential of Dat in their workflow, while people who are new to the technology can develop a better understanding of how Dat works through hands-on learning. Further goals of the session are to expose participants to open data sets, as well as introduce concepts like reproducibility and transparency, and to give them the tools to publish their own data online.

Thanks for the proposal @daniellecrobinson & team. Will be an ideal session for the hackerspace and super curious about how people think to use Dat in their current projects.
