What will happen in your session?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will first identify issues of privacy and security that they can innovatively explore and convey through gaming and narrative contexts. By defining the key ideas, feelings, and actions that these issues embody, participants will then explore possibilities for collaborative storytelling through tabletop gaming tools like remixable gaming systems and through producing digital interactive fiction. Participants will then work to produce a set of games and narratives about exploring, experiencing, and playing concepts of privacy and security. By the end of this session, attendees will have a self-created product, a deeper understanding of internet health, and a set of ludic practices to engage in play and production for future teaching, publication, and dialogue.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

At the end of this session, participants will have played through role-playing narratives that illustrate how to embody internet health practices. Further, they will have authored their own stories—either collectively through designing and play-testing a role-playing game or individually through writing an interactive fiction narrative. These texts will be shared both with other participants in the session and online for the general public. All materials created will be available for others to read, remix, and share after the session ends. By discussing, playing, and producing games and interactive texts, participants will develop key habits and routines related to internet safety and ways to share these practices with other audiences.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Antero is a great facilitator and an expert in game-based learning, especially through role-playing games. I have no doubt that this would be an amazing session. It would also fit well into any Mozilla Privacy Arcade subspace on the Privacy & Security floor.
