What will happen in your session?

This session will provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities faced by human-rights technologists working with at-risk groups collecting and sharing mobile media. Panelists will discuss their experiences working to create accurate, preservation-standard records online from a technical and community-based participatory design perspective. We will review needs for collaboration with diverse groups working with sensitive media from conflict areas and independent media outlets to lower-freedom environments and areas with limited connectivity. We will then have attendees break into groups based on their areas of expertise and interests where they will discuss and share 1-3 questions they have related to human rights technologies. We’ll discuss concerns from most to least common and share answers there and on a public document.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This session seeks to explore new audiences and user scenarios as well as develop inter-organizational bonds. Attendees will have a chance to learn about and use our tools and can help us to improve them both conceptually and via usability feedback. We also aim to bring issues of “narrative agency” and online privacy to the forefront for personal digital media by creating tools that afford users full control and long-term preservation of their historical record online. We will have a whiteboard and sticky notes to identify major concerns of the group and next steps. We will then create an secure document to share notes from the session and to keep community conversation alive.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

White boards, markers, and multi-colored post-its.

@erikao is this of interest?

@msaunby looks interesting, but outside of the scope of what we're thinking about this year. thanks for suggestion though.

Unfortunately, we didn't feel this session quite fit within the Digital Inclusion space this year, so I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
