What will happen in your session?

Discussion/analysis of challenges facing post-secondary education providers (universities, colleges, and teachers) in using the internet. Participants will feedback on a model we’ve developed and collaborate on a set of questions to support effective decision-making in selecting digital technologies in post-secondary education.

Digital technologies offer students and educators many benefits. However, as their use increases, we argue that individual staff, course teams, and institutions must develop and apply consistent and comprehensive criteria when choosing specific digital technologies. Many institutional decisions currently concentrate on pedagogic, technical and economic criteria. But these might not be sufficiently analysed or explained to users (learners/tutors). Our approach adds a fourth dimension which is often neglected – the ethics underpinning the use of selected digital technologies.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal: Building on a Matt Mitchell Mozilla coaching session, we want to ensure difficult and even unwelcome questions about the use of technology in post-secondary education can be asked. We want to convince educators that asking these questions and seeking answers are a vital part of any decision-making that involves learners and their data.

Outcomes: 1) Elaboration and possible modification of a simple model we have developed based on the 4 dimensions we mention above (pedagogic, technical, economic, ethical). The session will enable participants to adapt this model to their own context. 2) Further development of our bank of focus questions, collaboratively written during the session, to be used by anyone choosing/using digital technologies in education.
