[ Submitter's Name ] Matt Johnson [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Alley Interactive [ Submitter's Github ] @xmattus

What will happen in your session?

Today’s open source landscape offers content creators a massive array of tools, platforms, and means of getting information from their fingertips to their readers’ eyeballs. Yet, this cornucopia can be bewildering and many types of publishing organizations, be they commercial, nonprofit, advocacy, or small groups of individuals, have a difficult time understanding how to put these pieces together to deliver holistic, compelling web experiences to their intended audience.

This session will be an interactive simulation where groups will assume different fictional publishing organization identities and create a technology plan for how to build a web product that brings their content to the world. In the process, they will address both organizational challenges and technology management questions in formulating their plans.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants who work in publishing organizations, are thinking of starting one or getting involved in one, or are just interested in the concept, will get a chance to look broadly at the management and technology challenges of planning and building a web publishing product. They will gain perspective on the criteria used to make decisions about this kind of product development.

The facilitator is the CTO of a digital agency that works with publishers and nonprofits and has significant experience in understanding the internal structures of such organizations and projects; participants will develop a similar understanding based on a fictional challenge.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Whiteboard, sticky notes, pens, note paper.
