[ Session Name ] Creating active digital citizens in our city [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion [ Secondary Space ] Open Innovation

[ Submitter's Name ] Richard Gevers [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Open Data Durban [ Submitter's Github ] @opendatadurban

What will happen in your session?

In the session, there will be a discussion of what it means to be an active digital citizen in today's cities and the challenges faced by citizens in connecting to the city to live, work, play, and learn, based on examples from around the world. With my experience running Open Data Durban, Africa's first city-focused open data lab, we will unpack the elements that would go into an inclusive digital city toolkit (for e.g. digital tools, technical infrastructure, process, design, etc.) for use by city authorities, CSOs, citizens and other relevant organizations. From my experience in leading our current Durban Answers project, and from my role on the National Treasury Cities Support Programme advisory group on the country's biggest metros.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of the session is to collate the various experiences of people working in technology, civic tech, open data, policy, and the many other relevant fields of challenges cities face with access and digital inclusion. We want to see future cities where the citizenry is happy, to try to shift the dialogue around smart cities from sensors and bots to social cohesion and inclusivity. Once we have understood and laid out the various experiences, challenges, and opportunities, we will outline an inclusive digital city toolkit, for use by city officials and planners, citizens, and organisations involved in city-building. The outcomes will be a collated brief of digital inclusion city topics, and an outline for an inclusive digital city toolkit.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

This session will just need office supplies (a whiteboard, whiteboard markers, sticky notes, paper for notes and larger sheets of paper for group work)

Time needed

90 mins

@opendatadurban I'm seeking clarity on your stipend request. Your proposal has made it through to the next phase of consideration by the Digital Inclusion wrangler team. Unfortunately though, we've got way more seeking stipends than we have access to. If we were unable to give you access to a stipend, might you have other means available to you to make it to Mozfest?

This is a wonderful session proposal with concrete outcomes. Unfortunately, we're not able to accept it in the Digital Inclusion space, but we'd encourage @bacharakis and @auremoser to take a look for the Open Innovation space.

Sorry, my mistake. Would also encourage @leahcatherine and @XtianBerrisoup to consider as part of the Access sub-theme within Digital Inclusion. My comment above should have been specific to the Community sub-theme.

Unfortunately, we didn't feel this session quite fit within the Digital Inclusion space this year, so I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

Unfortunately, we also cannot accommodate this session and no longer have travel stipends available to support additional sessions, so we're removing our milestone as well.

Thank you for your time here, the project sounds great, but we have already distributed our stipends and unless you are able to attend without a stipend, I'm afraid we cannot accept the session.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
