[ Session Name ] Algorithms unpacked: creating learning tools to demystify and comprehend the machines in our lives [ Primary Space ] Web Literacy [ Secondary Space ] Decentralization

[ Submitter's Name ] Tin Geber [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] tin.fyi [ Submitter's Github ] @tingeber

What will happen in your session?

What's an algorithm? No really, what does it actually do?

Algorithms (machine-based filtering, sorting, decision-making programs) run our digital lives, and are increasingly eager to run our physical lives too. There are lots of papers, opinion pieces, and news articles on the effects of algorithms, but they rarely make the effort to help humanity comprehend what an algorithm actually does.

There's no escaping automatisation — we need to find ways of understanding it better, so that we can interact with it more smartly and critically.

This session is for trainers — veterans and hopefuls — that want to co-create learning modules to help people understand how algos do what they do, why they do it, and what we can do about it.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The participants of this session will produce learning tools (facilitation session structures, blueprints for interactive learning, experiential game mechanics) that trainers, facilitators, teachers of all kinds can use to help their communities, classrooms, family and friends.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Nothing apart copious amounts of the usual facilitator's little helpers (flipcharts, post its, sharpies, masking tape, walls)

Time needed

90 mins

@tingeber Thanks for your proposal. Could you expand on the session contact and goals to give us a clearer picture of the activities that participants could expect to do on the day? Thank you

tingeber commented 7 years ago

Hi @ArtsAward thanks for the interest and sorry for the delay in answering.

The goal

A well-packaged, well-explained, zero (or low) tech, ADIDS learning methodology with clearly defined activities, materials, time, etc.

Based on the participants' proclivity for use of other materials, tools and methods (games, more or less complex online and offline tech solutions, etc) the final output can be more or less complex. We will however do our best to facilitate practical results by the end of the session, and make sure there's a concrete plan forward post-session.

Context

The learning tools developed in the session are meant to be available for trainers of all sorts to incorporate into their training programs. Some example venues for implementation:

Ideally some, hopefully most, participants will have enough of an understanding of how algorithms (machine-based mediation) operate, in order to then focus on finding the best way to express it through adult-learning activities.

Draft activities

  1. Focusing the session narrative: what is the most important challenge or issue to express about how algorithms work? Which components aren't clear, where to focus? Distributed post-it work, probably through a fisher's market activity
  2. Breakout groups: brainstorming activities. Each group focuses on a challenge or issue, and devises a draft narrative for a learning activity. Report back, voting on best ideas
  3. Play testing the narratives: fine-tuning methodology for a learning experience that works. Breakout groups, or plenary work, depending on the number of ideas the groups want to take forward
  4. Documenting the process: taking time to create the facilitator's guide to the activity
  5. Planning next steps

Hello @tingeber ! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to the issue with an outline of the topics or activities for your session. You don’t need to send your slidedeck to us, but if you could please reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and time estimates for your session that would be great.

I wanted to also check in about your proposed session length. Is there any way that you could trim down to 60 minutes? We have limited slots for 90 minutes and we want to see if this is a possibility. Please consider this as you send us your session outline. Thanks!

Dear Facilitators, we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)

Hey @tingeber - I think we're all good on the outline request from @jonathanprozzi , you've provided plenty of detail already, so thank you for that! We'll be contacting facilitators soon with a proposed schedule.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Also, if possible, please let us know if it's possible to run this as a 60 minute session, we have too many 90 minute proposals so are reaching out to see they can be adjusted. Thanks and let us know!

tingeber commented 6 years ago

Hey @flukeout and @jonathanprozzi sorry for the delay.

It can be adapted to a 60 minute session if needed, sure.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hello @tingeber - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

PS: Kept you scheduled for a 90 min slot

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hey @tingeber - would it be possible to run this session on Sunday @ 12:15 (also a 90m slot) instead of the scheduled Saturday @ 11:15? We've got a Sunday person with a conflict looking to swap. Let me know, cheers!

tingeber commented 6 years ago

hey @flukeout - sure let's move it to Sunday. and thanks for keeping it in a 90 minute slot!

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Thank you @tingeber - I'll confirm with the other session and update the schedule and this issue when it's finalized.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

OK - I've updated the schedules and you are now on Sunday @ 12:15 - thank you for your flexibility!

tingeber commented 6 years ago

Hi @flukeout - some people reached out to say that they still see my session on Saturday, so I checked and it's on Saturday for me as well. Can you please check whether the update went through?

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Thanks for notifying me @tingeber - I've just updated it, I'm sorry about that! The final schedule is here https://trello.com/b/MCuN0yDz/mozfest-web-lit-updated and I'll make sure tonight that everything is updated correctly in Guidebook - I thought it was.
