What will happen in your session?

In this all-ages session you’ll digitally design your own stencil and then we’ll use a laser cutter to produce your very own stencil. It’s easy to design your own shirts and use tools at makerspaces to print them! The session will start with a quick intro to DIY printmaking and digital fabrication from a member of the League of Just Us. Next we’ll each work on computers to design a stencil with bridges and then cut it out on a laser cutter. After this session participants can go over to the DIY stencil printing area to use their stencil to print their own tote bag, shirt, bandana or patch.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Activists, school clubs, and community groups often need shirts, bags, signs and other things printed for their organizing and events. If you have access to a laser cutter, you can easily create tools to make your own custom prints! In this session participants will learn about DIY printmaking and leave with their own unique stencil that was cut out on a laser cutter. The concrete goal is for each participant to make a stencil design and then have it cut on the laser cutter. The broad goal is to empower people by teaching how easy it is to make your own stencils for printing.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

I will need access to the Ravensbourne laser cutter. Ideally this session would take place in the makerspace so participants could see the laser working. There were some nice workbenches in there that I think would work great for this session. I run the digital fabrication lab at the makerspace in my hometown and train people on proper use of it. I was also trained and certified last year on the Ravensbourne laser cutter. If needed, I could do that again this year--it was very quick. To keep it simple participants will not run the laser, I will run it but they would do the design work. Also, we’ll need some inexpensive cardstock material to use for cutting for the stencils.

@drewrwilson - If we was not able to offer a travel and accomodation stipen, would you still be able to attend?

I'm removing the Youth Zone milestone to allow this session to be considered by other spaces.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
