[ Session Name ] Crypto Colloquium -- Advancing EU encryption policy [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy
[ Submitter's Name ] Camille Fischer [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mozilla Tech Policy Fellowship
[ Additional facilitators ] TBD (EU Tech Policy Fellow)
What will happen in your session?
Participants will engage in a policy discussion prompted by the following scenario: A European government has passed legislation mandating that all mobile devices used in that country must include an access mechanism for law enforcement pursuant to legal process. Participants will discuss the consequences that such a proposal would have for law enforcement, national security, and the EU economy.
This conversation is designed to be a follow-on from a U.S. focused conversation in September 2017 -- taking the lessons learned from the U.S. conversation and scaling out to address the European and global impact that a legal mandate for encrypted devices would have.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
Following the session, I will publish a lessons learned document of the findings to educate UK and EU policy makers on the consequences of encryption legislation. The session is designed to build bridges between U.S. and EU privacy activists to harmonize international encryption strategy. It is also designed to balance the dialogue between the US and European governments and prevent reactionary policy making that targets a neutral and beneficial technology.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
Copies of U.S. lessons learned document.
