What will happen in your session?

This session will explain the basics and importance of Open Internet (net neutrality) policies and compare different approaches to Open Internet policy in the US, EU, India, Brazil. Experts from those countries will lead a roundtable discussion on how policies were adopted, how they are different/similar, how they impact individuals, organizations, companies, government, whether they're working and whether there are efforts in other countries to adopt similar protections. The US representative(s) will provide an update on the Trump FCC’s proceeding to repeal the 2015 Open Internet rules; potential impact of the repeal; efforts to preserve them. The India representative will summarize rapid development of net neutrality policy - what's been unique to the Indian experience? Any insights for other jurisdictions?

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of this session is to provide a comparative study of different Open Internet policies and to learn what has worked and what has not, both in the process for getting such policies adopted, but also in the policies themselves. What research/policy arguments were critical in convincing policymakers to adopt these policies? What messaging was most compelling? How much did the policies of different countries influence the others - and relatedly, how did the legal framework around communication regulation in each country (for example, Title II in the US) customize the nature of the debate?

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

There may be a need for a projector, but likely nothing more than that.

Time needed

60 mins

hey - @vigneshwerd. I'm wondering if you've scheduled this session yet, and, if so, for what day/time? I believe a couple of your panelists are also running sessions in the Digital Inclusion space, and I want to make sure we don't create a conflict. Thanks!

Hey @hannahkane , We have scheduled this session on Oct 28th from 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM.

Great. Seems like there's no conflict then. Thanks, @vigneshwerd!
