What will happen in your session?

As a Mozilla Tech Policy Fellow, this session will focus on concentration and dominance of large digital platforms, how companies should behave in order to protect consumers and ensure robust competition and innovation, and current competition issues including EU/Google. We will discuss antitrust and competition principles at a high level, but focus on getting input from Mozfest participants to share their views on the state of competition from the field. Key questions: Does concentration make it harder for startup companies enter and compete? Are there practices that major platforms engage in that stifle competition or innovation? Have large platforms become gatekeepers that can dictate unfair or anticompetitive terms to users or competitors? What impact do large platforms have on innovation?

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal will be to get a broader perspective on the current highly debated antitrust and competition issues related to digital platforms with a broad cross section of Mozfest participants who have factual knowledge and views from the field and antitrust and competition experts. Understanding and learning will be gained by fostering a conversation with varying views of the competitive landscape and how antitrust and competition law can and should be used to address potential concentration or competition concerns.
