[ Session Name ] Tech for Good: How Do We Get More Technologists Working in the Public Interest? [ Primary Space ] Web Literacy [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Alan Davidson [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mozilla Tech Policy Fellowship

What will happen in your session?

How can we inspire a next generation of technologists to promote the public good – in government and in civil society – as a part of their careers?

Technology is creating new opportunities to solve great social challenges, transform government and civil society, and improve the human condition. It is also creating new risks as technology impacts human rights, equality, jobs, and consumer protection. Maximizing the opportunities at hand will require more “public interest technologists” pursuing the public good. Today we do not have enough of them.

In this session experts will lead a collaborative discussion with participants on how to build the community of technologists working in the public interest, and how to create career paths for their work.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

There are several goals for this session:

  1. Exchange stories and best practices globally for engaging technologists in projects in the public interest.
  2. Develop a set of actionable ideas for expanding the pool of public interest-oriented technologists, particularly at the university level.
  3. Grow the international network of people interested in working in this area.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

The ability to project slides (a projector and screen) would be helpful, though not essential.

Time needed

60 mins

Thanks for your confirmation @abdavidson !!! :)

Hello @abdavidson! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

Hey @abdavidson - have you had a chance to put together a session outline? Please post it when you have - it helps us understand the session better and also lets us see if we can help in any way in terms of space setup, etc. Cheers!

abdavidson commented 6 years ago

Hi - I am still working on a session outline, to make this work best for potential participants. I should have something early next week.

Query: Do we have a time and date set yet for the session? I had invited other speakers to join but they are pending the exact timing. Thanks!

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@abdavidson - looking forward to the outilne. I'm working on a first pass of the schedule and will share it with all participants later today (or early tomorrow)!

abdavidson commented 6 years ago

Thanks @flukeout, appreciate the quick response. If there is any chance of this session landing on Saturday (instead of Sunday) that will work much better for my collaborators...

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hello @abdavidson - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

PS - put your session in on the Saturday.
