[ Additional facilitators ] Joanna Milner, Multnomah County Library

What will happen in your session?

Humankind is developing new tools that are meant to help us make dispassionate decisions, but in effect, the opposite is occurring: we are teaching our innate biases to the machines that make many aspects of our technical systems run.

In this session, Web Literacy Leaders Davis and Joanna will review the causes and effects of implicit bias and share how our human beliefs sometimes dictate how our systems work. We will demonstrate “Build Your Own Algorithm,” a new activity that helps learners new to the topic understand how algorithms work. In an idea-generating activity, we will then ask our participants to help us create a second activity that can deepen our learners’ understanding of this topic.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

To be a healthy individual, it’s important to understand how your mind works. From learning new behaviors to shedding unhealthy perspectives, meditation on how your world view developed is an important early step. From an Internet Health perspective, a similar approach is necessary when it comes to one of the more hidden actors on the web: the algorithm.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

we're all good, thanks!

Hi @daviserinanderson Thanks for your proposal. Please could you let us know whether the stipend request is vital to your participation at Mozfest or whether you would have the means to attend without this? Thank you

Hi Julie,

Thank you for asking. I'm part of Mozilla's Web Literacy Leaders cohort, and it's my understanding that travel to MozFest is covered as part of my participation in that program.

I'm working with An-Me Chung (anme@mozillafoundation.org) on this if you'd like to be in touch with her.

Thanks, Davis

Hello- yes this person has travel covered already- removing stipend request

flukeout commented 7 years ago

This session sounds fascinating, but it probably better suited to the Digital Inclusion space. It looks like @ArtsAward has removed that label, so I'll add it back on.

cc @kenyatta1

Could potentially be also good for Open Innovation. cc @auremoser

Unfortunately, we didn't feel this session quite fit within the Digital Inclusion space this year, so I'm removing the Digital Inclusion label to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

auremoser commented 7 years ago

I'm adding our label back for Open Innovation and cc'ing @KirstieJane ; If Davis' travel is covered, I see no reason to not accept this session at least in our Gallery if possible.

Would it be possible to feature the session in our Gallery? I think our Shed slots might be limited.

KirstieJane commented 7 years ago

Let's do it! We can take a look at the schedule and see where it fits best! Really important topic! 🙌

Hi @marcwalsh - we're going to pull this session as it overlaps thematically with another and @daviserinanderson has two other sessions to run. Please could you close this issue and remove the session from the guidebook?
