What will happen in your session?

We will discuss the challenges citizens have to control the sharing of their personal data in existing data protection laws. Citizens share a lot of personal data and information online and offline where new technologies easily identify individuals and their behaviors by combining scraps of personal information. We remain oblivious of our data shadows and how they become inferences and correlation. Users are unconcerned about their data when using services, albeit, in many jurisdictions the lawfulness of such is based on two data protection principles of consent and notice. We will elaborate on the future of control beyond notice and consent focusing on: data collection opacity lawfulness cognitive constraint and behavioral bias risk aversion and immediate gratification

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The session aims to contribute to the informational trade-offs privacy decisions intake. The session will take a role-play format where a moderator plays the role of the policy maker to be advised on solutions to control that do not rely merely in consent and the other speakers are the advisers. understand the true role of consent on privacy and personal data protection tackle the problems of information (Privacy Policies - PP; Terms of Use - ToU) and transparency (tracking and Online Behavior Advertising) propose practical solutions for control (Privacy by Design; Privacy Enhancing Technologies) discuss the benefits and pitfalls of “privacy commons” for PP and ToU one page policy briefing on the “proposal”
