What will happen in your session?

NEXMAP’s “Open Data/Open Minds” is an equity-based data literacy and civic engagement project that combines tradition and innovation in its use of paper and electronics. While we focus on the 10-14 age group and their educators, the approach and materials support learners and learning spaces of all kinds. We will share prototypes and discuss our work with designer Roland Ellis and London-based creative team Artists & Engineers. Topics to be covered include: 1) content and instructional frameworks; 2) outreach and community; 3) interface design and user interaction; 4) the hardware and software stack. We are eager for the MozFest community's input as we work on decentralizing civic and scientific data to help young people better understand and shape their worlds.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Since this work happens at the intersection of data, edtech, and the open web with a focus on science, literacy and connected learning, the Mozilla community is uniquely suited to improve this project. Our goals at Mozfest and in this session are to find collaborators -- coders, designers, educators, advocates -- who may be interested to engage with this work and, most importantly, localize this it in their networks and communities.

Time needed

60 mins

I've followed this work for a long while and am glad to see this opportunity for the Mozilla Network to become familiar with it. This would be an excellent session from @esylvan & @dmcole1 - one that speaks to our open science audience and our broader audience of activists, artists, developers, educators, and librarians interested in open data in government and youth civic engagement.

Yes, this looks very interesting. @esylvan would you be interested in exhibiting / installing any of your work in the decentralization space if appropriate? cc @cubicgarden

esylvan commented 7 years ago

Yes, @jontutcher we would. We could display our samples and example projects with some signage that explains how the materials are used. Thanks!

@esylvan Thanks for submitting your proposal and following up with your responses. It sounds like a fascinating session. We have a limited number of travel and accomodation stipends to go around and these are now pretty much all assigned. Do you think you be able to come and run this session without the aid of a stipend?

esylvan commented 7 years ago

@maboa we would try to come regardless, but currently do not have funding to do so. This project was accepted last year but we could not attend do to lack of funding. We very much want to come so we will try our best to get funding to do so.

maboa commented 7 years ago

@esylvan We're come to the point where we select sessions Elizabeth. Any change on the funding side?

esylvan commented 7 years ago

We are writing our funder to see if they have made a decision about the next round. Watch this spot. I should hear in the next couple of days. Is that fast enough?

esylvan commented 7 years ago

@maboa Hi again, Mark. So our funder responded and said that they can fund our trip! I can't tell you how excited we are!

cubicgarden commented 7 years ago

Thanks @esylvan for letting us know and great to hear

esylvan commented 7 years ago

@maboa Hi, is there a timeframe for notification? We'd like to book our tickets soon, if need be, so that we can keep costs down. Thank you!

maboa commented 7 years ago

@esylvan If you haven't received an email confirming your session's acceptance, you should receive one very soon. We're very excited to be including this session and will be reaching out to you shortly :)

cubicgarden commented 7 years ago

You are in for sure... Email is on its way soon

esylvan commented 6 years ago

Update: we've decided that financially it makes more sense for only one of our team members to attend Mozfest. So I'll be attending and presenting this topic but my associate, David Cole, will not.

cubicgarden commented 6 years ago

ok thanks for the update
