What will happen in your session?

We’re hosting a session to map out how we can create the Big Open together. The Open Movement has strong players like Mozilla fighting for an open internet, Wikimedia lobbying for free knowledge, Creative Commons helping everyone to share their work. We share a similar mindset, we attend the same events, we support each other’s work, we advocate for an “open by default” world.

Now we’d like to ask: what are opportunities for joining forces? How can we collaborate for even greater impact? And what story about the “Big Open”can we tell, to encourage stronger collaboration? We’re collecting ideas around four major themes: community, policy, organisation, common narratives. Join us for a conversation about how to be open together.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

In this session, we are eager to work with participants from the free and open scene to identify common goals and discuss forms of collaboration. Each player in this field has their specific focus, and we would like to map opportunities, ideas and thoughts for a more collaborative future – together we can be bigger than the sum of our parts!

We are aiming at identifying synergies as well as contacts from different organizations and networks who are interested in working together and fostering the ties between the different Open Movement players.

Insights from this session will feed into a broader discussion that we will be conducting over the coming months.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Sticky notes and sharpies.

The session itself will be 90 mins long and – after a brief introduction – be interactive instead of lecture style. We would like to add some drop-in time (2 hours) for informal conversations afterwards, so that people can immediately connect and build upon the outcomes of the session.

Nice session feels like open innovation or web literacy could be better for this? Maybe we can host the drop sessions later?

Making a note: Earlier on Sunday is better, as Katherine Maher (Wikimedia Executive Director) may have to leave MozFest early on Sunday to catch a flight.
