What will happen in your session?

The Alan Turing Institute is the UK's hub for Data Science. Turing researchers are from a plethora of university departments ranging from mathematics and computer science to linguistics, psychiatry, civil engineering and law, and collaborate with partners in many industries, including finance, healthcare and national security. In our session we will present our efforts to build a culture of research that is "reproducible from the beginning" and "open by default".

We will showcase the training curriculum we have curated for PhD students, guidelines on data management for senior investigators starting projects, and open toolkits that make studies more efficient throughout their research cycle. We will also discuss the challenges associated with analysing proprietary data, protecting intellectual property and ensuring patient confidentiality.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Although the strength of the Turing Institute is its diversity and interdisciplinary focus, this is also what makes our goal of building a culture of reproducible research so challenging. Wrangling a diverse set of academics from different disciplines and with a variety of domain specific publishing norms makes it difficult to come up with guidelines that work for all.

The selfish goal of our session is to engage MozFest participants who have experience working in similar environments and learn from their experiences. We also hope that members of research departments of all levels of seniority will be inspired to follow our lead and nurture an open and reproducible culture in their own institute.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We do not need any additional materials beyond post-it notes, pens and papers, and a projector. We will provide our own laptop and all session materials will be available online.

I'm going to pull this session as I'm going to be too busy wrangling to facilitate it. 😭

Hi @marcwalsh - please could you close this issue and remove the session from the guidebook, I'm not able to facilitate this session as well as wrangle 😥

Thanks Kirstie! Closing and deleting on Guidebook.
