What will happen in your session?

In Fall 2015, New York City launched an ambitious plan to scale computing education to all public school students by 2025. Our proposed session brings together the wider computing education ecosystem including the NYC Department of Education, the Processing Foundation, and the Browning School, a private preparatory school. Together, we seek to engage practitioners and educators in building a new vision for CS education that puts students first. Through three breakout groups participants will 1) explore how code can be used for creative and personal expression; 2) brainstorm how we might teach student the ethical implications of computing; and 3) provide feedback and contribute to the open source CS4All Blueprint.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Over the past few years the CS4All NYC team has observed numerous challenges and opportunities through scaling computing education in the U.S.’ largest school system, serving over 1.1 million students. By sharing our lessons learned, gathering feedback on our open-source Blueprint, co-creating new resources, we hope to inspire others to grow creative and ethical computing education in their own communities. We will also facilitate an online community that shares updates, projects, and experiences in the program. This session will thus improve computing education by creating wider global engagement in the movement.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

None.

Time needed

90 mins

@cs4allNYC Thanks for your proposal. Can you let us know if you are able to attend without a travel stipend, or is the stipend absolutely required for you to come to Mozfest? Thank you!

cs4allnyc commented 7 years ago

Hi @ArtsAward! We're working on a way to support both of our collaborators but the two participants from the NYC Department of Education would not be able to travel without a stipend due to restrictions on our funding sources (i.e. we can't pay for international travel). Thanks!

ArtsAward commented 7 years ago

Thanks for your reply @cs4allnyc. Our stipends cover the travel and accommodation for one person per session (unless they are under 16 and need a chaperone). We are currently in the process of curation and will need a little more time to come back to you with an outcome, however it would be helpful in the meantime if you can consider how you might cover the costs for your additional facilitators if you intend for them to attend. Thank you. @flukeout

cs4allnyc commented 7 years ago

Totally understand, thanks for letting us know. We'll see what we can do to get the other facilitators there. And thank you for your consideration of our proposed session!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

@cs4allnyc Another option would be to maybe have a Skype or video call setup to allow an additional facilitator to participate if they cannot be there in person. We could help coordinate that.

cs4allnyc commented 7 years ago

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing @flukeout!

cs4allnyc commented 7 years ago

Confirming our attendance! Thanks again!

edovio commented 7 years ago

Thanks for your quickly reply!!! :)

Hi @cs4allnyc! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal.

I wanted to also check in about your proposed session length. Is there any way that you could trim down to 60 minutes? We have limited slots for 90 minutes and we want to see if this is a possibility. Please consider this as you send us your session outline. Thanks! Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

Haha @cs4allnyc - love the Carlton GIF. Have you had a chance to think through an outline for your session as @jonathanprozzi was asking about? It would be great to see a breakdown of the activities and estimated time for each component of the session. Thanks!

cs4allnyc commented 6 years ago

Hi @flukeout @jonathanprozzi, we just met today and this is our proposed outline. We'd really like to stick to 90 minutes if feasible and would love a room with at least three tables so we can run mini group sessions. Let me know what you think.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hello @cs4allnyc - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

Hello @cs4allnyc , I need to ask you to give me the Email contact of all the additional Facilitators in your Session. You can send me by Email at the address: edovio@mozillaitalia.org. Thanks you & see you at the MozFest!!!

cs4allnyc commented 6 years ago

@flukeout! Looks like one of our presenters did not book their flight in such a way that we can present on Sunday. Any chance we can swap with someone and present on Saturday? Thanks!

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Lol at the gif - sure yeah, for now I'm just collecting feedback on the schedule. It's still rolling in. I'll make a note and re-shuffle things. Will send out anther note when it's "final".

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hey @cs4allnyc - would it be possible to run this session on Sunday @ 12:15 (also a 90m slot) instead of the scheduled Saturday @ 11:15? We've got a Sunday person with a conflict looking to swap. Let me know, cheers!

cs4allnyc commented 6 years ago

Hey @flukeout we'd asked to move to Saturday because of the same issue...

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Oh, rats - I'm really sorry about that @cs4allnyc - please disregard. I'd forgotten about that and didn't notice the comments above when asking again.
