[ Submitter's Name ] Samantha Hindle [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] University of California, San Francisco [ Submitter's Github ] @SamanthaHindle

What will happen in your session?

After stating the CoC, I will play clips from various podcasts that have different styles and degrees of editing, including my very first podcast, to illustrate that podcasting is open to any level of experience. Participants will pair up and interview each other to ask “What does open mean to you?”. I will help participants improve audio quality using free Audacity software, show them how to use a free trial of Hindenburg software to string their clips together, and add open source music/sound effects. We will record a group intro and outro for the podcast and then merge all our efforts together to form a collaborative MozFest podcast made up of individual stories about what open means to each participant.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Podcasting has exploded since 2014, and is an extremely effective and innovative medium for getting your voice heard, literally. Therefore, the main goal of the session is to empower the participants with the basic skills needed to become a podcaster, to illustrate that podcasting is open and inclusive, and to have fun! In the spirit of being open and inclusive, we will create a podcast episode together, which will form a segment of episode #1 of my podcast focused on the open and preprint movements.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

My session requires participants to bring a laptop or tablet and to download software (Audacity and a free trial of Hindenburg) for audio editing and podcast production. I will work with the wranglers to maximize audio quality and I can bring 1 good quality mic with me. Ideally I would also like a drop-in location where participants, and other MozFest attendees, can express their thoughts on various aspects of working open and about publishing in biology, for incorporation into Episode #1 of my podcast.

@SamanthaHindle - this is so topical to our youth in the UK, as a youtube generation whom I think in a pole of UK jobs - becoming a youtuber was their first choice as a job :) - If we was not able to offer you a travel and accomodation stipend, would you still be able to attend?

SamanthaHindle commented 7 years ago

Hi @EPIKhub - Wow! I had no idea that becoming a youtuber has outranked becoming a footie player in the UK...I guess Rooney just hasn't cut it in the end :) The accommodation shouldn't be a problem as I know a decent number of people in London, but I'm not sure about the travel. I've applied for OpenCon in Berlin, and my Institute's library has submitted an application to sponsor me so if I am accepted and they are flexible with the travel dates, I could at least get to Berlin, which is substantially closer to London. Otherwise, I'll struggle without a travel stipend. I really want to go though, so if you have any other funding ideas, let me know. Thanks for reaching out.

@aprilcs - would you be interested in working with me for this session? It would be great to have another podcaster's perspective 💟

@SamanthaHindle - Thanks for the update, lets see what Web Lit decides first.

I can't make it to MozFest, but would love to collaborate to support this!

Unfortunately we didn't think this session was quite right for the Digital Inclusion space this year. I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

@SamanthaHindle Ill progress you to the next stage in the youth zone within the social action track. I would like to schedule a Skype call with you as a next step - can you email me at dorine.flies@gmail.com

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@SamanthaHindle Unfortunately when we reviewed with the session as a social action track today we dint think this session would work. I am thus removing our labels.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
