What will happen in your session?

An urban educator and game designer join forces to share an innovative approach they’ve used to create explorers and risk takers while engaging diverse learners in Minecraft. Join us as we share strategies developed for addressing civic engagement and building emotional intelligence.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of the session is to introduce individuals to Urban Element 79 (UE79) a project that uses games-based learning, civic engagement & design thinking to teach about the built environment. UE79 believe every community has something “good” or gold. Urban UE79 highlights the gold in communities and has participants apply the Power of 10 when they act as placemakers to encourage others to think about what’s special in their communities. Using human-centered approach participants begin to engage in constructive conversation and action to revitalize urban communities. Our inaugural camp UE79: Build Your Own South Shore used Minecraft to build South Shore a community in Chicago and to develop emotional intelligence.

Hi Gina Thanks for submitting this session, we feel that as this session stands right now, there are a lot of methodologies being tried to be incorporated, that in itself can be one sessions worth of time.

Since this is for the youth zone, and taking social awareness and action into consideration, which approach would be best used in order to make this submission stronger rather than having too many cooks spoil the soup?

It is great that the session tries to help identify the gold in a community, however, we don't expect youth from the UK to be aware of the gold in a community they have not lived in before, thus would you be willing to customize the session to then letting them come up with a London community and identifying the gold in that community using one design methodology that would ultimately lead to them understanding emotional intelligence?

@GinaGrant just a heads up, given this is the YouthZone, we can't guarantee participants in this session will bring along a laptop (given most of them have a habit not doing so). We can see about scheduling it with the small set of laptops we have, but again we can't guarantee this as we only have a small number.

As well, assuming software wise all they need is Minecraft? Do they need a Minecraft login each to take part in this workshop?

It has been emailed out twice now over the past few weeks to the email address associated with this session. Could this please be filled in ASAP or this session may not be able to take place.
