Surely web literacy is better for this workshop?
Yeah, I think you're right. Will you just assign it to web literacy, or do I need to email someone?
I can suggest it to @flukeout @jonathanprozzi to look at as we remove it from our area. Good luck...
@Btayeg - Thanks, we are considering it now!
Hello @Btayeg - We are very happy to announce you that we have decided to accept your session at the festival this year! Congratulations! 🎉
Hey, @redshiftzero and I are excited to be part of the Web Literacy track, and thus confirming our attendance.
Co-presenter here - not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm free for this to be scheduled anytime other than Friday 2pm-5pm and Sunday 3pm-4:30pm.
Hello @Btayeg! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal.
I wanted to also check in about your proposed session length. Is there any way that you could trim down to 60 minutes? We have limited slots for 90 minutes and we want to see if this is a possibility. Please consider this as you send us your session outline. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.
Hi @jonathanprozzi, we will try to get you a rough outline early next week. I'm deliberating with my co-presenter regarding the session length. I will let you know as soon as they get back to me.
Here's a rough outline for the session that @Btayeg and myself will be giving, let us know if you need more details for any of the items below . We're happy with the session being 60 minutes.
Introduction: what makes a good data visualization, how to tell a story with data - 10 minutes
Walkthrough of the three datasets - 5 minutes
Show how to use each tool (these are primarily easy-to-use web based tools), generate a couple of examples of good and bad visualizations using the three datasets - 10 minutes
Activity: Partition audience into groups (~5 people per group), assign each group a dataset, have each group try out the visualization tools on their dataset. We'll be walking around as this happens to answer questions and provide feedback - 10 minutes
Shareout: Each group puts at least one graph back into a google drive folder we will have available. As time permits we get each group (or just a few if time is short) to share their visualization and what story they tried to tell with their dataset, what worked, what didn't, etc. - 5 minutes
Geocoding - why and when to do it - 5 minutes
Advancing learning - we'll share a list of resources for taking this knowledge to the next level, and we'll sketch out the landscape of more advanced data visualization tools so participants know where to begin - 5 minutes
Q&A - until end of session
Dear Facilitators, we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)
Hey @redshiftzero & @Btayeg - thanks very much for the outline, looks great! Thank you also for your flexibility around the session length. I've noted down the times that you're not able to host the session. We'll be in touch with a draft schedule for the space by the end of the week. Cheers!
Edited - changed duration to 60 minutes.
Hello @redshiftzero & @Btayeg, we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...
Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout
to get my attention.
We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.
Thanks!
Hello @Btayeg , I need to ask you to give me the Email contact of all the additional Facilitators in your Session. You can send me by Email at the address: edovio@mozillaitalia.org. Thanks you & see you at the MozFest!!!
@Btayeg - I'm writing to see if you'd be interested in helping out with the Thimble Zone. I'm trying to organize a few folks with HTML, CSS & JS skills who would like to demo mozilla's Thimble Editor. We'll have a few laptops set up with a sign and it would be great if we had a few volunteers to introduce people to it as well as get them started on some kind of beginner-friendly projects (or any ideas you may have).
If you're interested, let me know, and please also jump into the Etherpad and add your name and interest. I've also started a #thimble-zone channel in the Mozfest slack. Let me know if you have any questions!

What will happen in your session?
In our session, we’ll provide a chill introduction to creating beautiful data visualizations without specialized skills. We will use simple online tools like RawGraphs, Databasic, Tableau and other user-friendly tools to build visualizations of three datasets. We will demonstrate how we cleaned these sets and developed the final visualizations. Facilitators will be there to help participants follow along with the instructors on their computers. We will share some dos and don’ts on how to make an easy to understand data visualization for a general audience. After the demonstrations, we will answer general questions about how to get started with data visualization, and we will provide a list of resources for participants to continue their data viz journey.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
We all have the open data fever, but not all of us know how to analyze, visualize, or understand data beyond pie charts, graphs, and percentages. This session aims to bring those that have limited experience with data and get them started with using simple online tools.
In a nutshell, when participants leave our session, they will have practiced visualizing a dataset, they have an idea of what to look for in a dataset, and they will know where to find more resources to continue their data viz adventure.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
We will need a projector and a mic.
