What will happen in your session?

Augmented Communities is a workshop on how open-source technologies can be used to creatively amplify under-represented voices and sustain non-dominant cultures. This will be an exploration of important cultural narratives and proposed futures. We will facilitate participants with exercises in researching local histories, sculpting virtual models in a webVR environment (A-Frame), and viewing those monuments in the real world using Augmented Reality (Argon.js).

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Students will leave with:

• A speculative monument they helped to design and document.
• An introduction to webVR and AR development tools.
• An introduction to collaborating on a group code project
• The tools to create and host a web art work

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

No additional materials will be required for this workshop. Each participant will require a laptop and a recent iPhone or Android smartphone.
