[ Session Name ] Building Safer Distributed Communities and Networks: A Human Systems Approach [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Decentralization

[ Submitter's Name ] Kim Pham [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] IREX and the Internet Freedom Festival

[ Additional facilitators ] Pepe Borras,

What will happen in your session?

We're looking to build an approach to organizational security that increases the privacy and security of communities. Current approaches to organizational security focus on centralized systems of human organization. As a result, they struggle with the question of how to build and maintain safe distributed communities and networks?

Through this interactive session, we hope to answer this question with a focus on practical techniques and methods. Working together with participants, we will explore:

(a) What’s currently failing in organization security? Let's evaluate the key assumptions of current organizational security approaches to see how to build a better framework

(b) Is your distributed community/network safe? Let's identify best practices to build privacy and security for distributed communities and networks.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We hope to close the gap in organizational approaches to privacy and security for communities by looking at solutions at the human systems level (instead of an apps-based approach). Conventional approaches to organizational security typically focus on centralized systems of human organization. In contrast, social movements are increasingly moving towards distributed networks and communities. These groups often collaborate in digital spaces, where new threats and challenges emerge, especially for those working in defense of human rights. The outcomes of this conversation can also be helpful to tool developers currently working to improve the privacy and security of distributed networks and communities.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

This proposal has made it through to the next phase of consideration by the Privacy and Security team! We now need to reach out to the submitter on the matter of stipends. I note that this will need to be done via email.

Hi David,

Thanks for the update! This is Kim, one of the facilitators for this session. I am working on securing travel support independently and should have an update on Monday.

Nice! Thanks @quesoboard!!! Mozfest is quite a sizeable community event, but we're held together by paper, string, cardboard, and whole lot of heart. Speaking of heart, been checking out IREX and the Internet Freedom Festival. MORE POWER TO YOU, KIM!

Hi @bunnybooboo,

Unfortunately no concrete news so far. Please keep us in consideration for the stipend. If we are awarded travel support independently, we will update promptly.

Thanks,

Kim

I'm sorry to have to inform you, your proposal did not make it to our draft P&S space schedule. Unlocking for consideration from other teams.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.

Hi @bunnybooboo and @mozfest-bot: Thank you the update and letting us know.

We managed to secure travel support (just now!), so if a session is cancelled for any reason, we would gladly take the opportunity to deliver this session, as we see the questions key to building an open internet in the future. Thank you again!
