What will happen in your session?

The interactive 60-minute session that offers participants an opportunity to experience how employment searches or career advancement for working age adults can be severely thwarted in developed societies with relatively high rates of broadband penetration, but without equitable access and use of ICTs. Roughly modeled after 'Escape Room' and ‘Poverty Challenge’ experiences, participants will assume a profile of a digitally divided individual who is on the quest to secure employment that provides a livable wage in the shortest amount of time possible given a competitive job market. Participants will have little to no access to ICTs but will have opportunities to unlock ICTs through digital inclusion programming ‘hints’ that aid in bridging digital divides as they navigate common decision-making challenges.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of the session is to raise awareness about the hindrance of digital inequities to workforce development opportunities that by extension exacerbate economic inequality for individuals and communities often already facing other social challenges. For instance, how do you apply for an employment opportunity that requires an online application submission? Additionally, the immersive experience will show participants how integral ICTs, particularly the internet, are becoming to how we earn a living in high broadband penetration societies where the push for digital-by-default resources and services are leaving behind many communities. From this awareness, I hope to spur conversations during the conference that weigh the individual and collective opportunity cost of inaction toward digital inclusion for workforce development.
