[ Session Name ] Why you can't design digital security tools without collaborating with end users [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion [ Secondary Space ] Privacy and Security

[ Submitter's Name ] Dragana Kaurin [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Localization Lab

[ Additional facilitators ] Erin McConnell

What will happen in your session?

" Starting out by going over the general lifecycle of designing a digital security tool we will identify together where, in each of these stages, there are opportunities for working with your intended end users, and look at some reasons why developers fail to do that.

Collaboration and codesign can prevent many problems with the function: UX—Is the design intuitive, does it make users feel secure? Legal—Is encryption illegal in their country?Localization—Are the translations easy to understand? Access—Does your user live in a place with infrastructure that gives them steady connectivity?

We'll end by looking at how community building is vital for sharing these tools. We'll go over use cases from 3 countries, highlighting how inclusivity in innovation makes for stronger digital security tools."

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We want to see stronger privacy, circumvention, and digital security tools through collaboration and codesign. We want everyone to have a say in the design of technology that affects their work. We'd like to share the mistakes we see projects often make here and how they could be avoided through designing with your end user, not for them.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We need posterboards.

Good candidate for Learning Forum. This hits on several of the themes for the Digital Inclusion space.

Like this a lot. If this is chosen I'd imagine a bunch of P&S folks in attendance.

Unfortunately we didn't think this session was quite right for the Digital Inclusion space this year. I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.

We're still considering this one in Privacy and Security!!

AaaGhhh!! I'm sorry Dragana but we've been unable to take you proposal into the final Privacy and Security program schedule. We've collectively agreed it was so good we marked it as Outstanding. Really hard to have to say no to such a great proposal.

It's been very inspiring to us to experience such passion for communicating Privacy and Security amongst our peers. Thanks for taking the time to send your proposal, and also for your patience through such a rigorous process.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
