What will happen in your session?

We'll review what the goal looks like: visualization of multiple data sets with a geographical component, published as an interactive website.

Steps:

gather and process geospatial data
visualize it using tools such as CartoCSS, TileMill, etc
prepare visualization for the web using tools such as Mapbox
learn basics of publishing geospatial visualizations without relying on/paying for Mapbox
set up a basic environment (pre-built dev VM)
talk through how online maps and visualizations work
work through basics of working with online data: scraping, processing, analyzing
import processed data for visualization into TileMill
use CartoCSS to refine our visualization
publishing our results online via Mapbox,
I will give an overview of what's necessary to self-publish visualizations on a home server or very cheaply.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal is to get people familiar with particular tools, as well as work flows and a larger picture of how everything fits together technically in an online mapping project. Ideal outcome is that people feel vaguely confident that they're able to tackle their own project by themselves, and have a solid starting point from which to explore on their own.
