What will happen in your session?

Caesar Cipher wheel is an exiting activity for a small group of people around 5-6 participants for beginners. A story will be created for the participants to make up. One of the participants will be writing an encrypted message using the Caesar Cipher after they have completed the message the other 4-5 people will attempt to decipher it.

After the participants have mastered the way of using a code or codes they will have to look around the building for coded messages for them to find and the winner will receive a special award. They also have to search twitter for hidden messages to archive the final challenge.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

My goal of the session is to share my knowledge to other people for them to comprehend what cryptography is really about. Cryptography is a useful skill to learn because it is used for keeping your personal information safe and without it everything on the internet would be open sourced and people could read your personal information such as your bank details or your email password. Without it nothing on the internet would be kept a secret and this session will give you a further understanding of the science behind it and how it works like clockwork.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

-Paper -Pen -Pencil -Scissor -Glue

@connerballard could we add this to our Twitter strategy; first to tweet via our twitter bot on the solution wins

Hi Marie-Sol,

Let me first tell you : well done :) I was a crypo engineer for a few years and I can tell you the young me would have loved to play a game like this. Do you also plan to explain how to "break the code" ? Or do you intend participants to test different shifts until one word appears ?

Depending on how fast youth grasp the concept of the Caesar cipher, it could be interesting for the final challenge to do a message encrypted using the Vigenere Cipher : the encryption key is a word or a full phrase (instead of a simple shift) and can be fun to guess. When ciphertext is short, it is also more resistant to cheaters (who go online to find an already made caesar calculator ^^)

Also, you could plan to distribute to participant of the sessions alphabet table with the shift already implemented, like the table here : http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/codes/vigenere.php
