[ Session Name ] Free Basics and Other Cheap Connectivity Innovations: What Works in Local Context?
[ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion
[ Secondary Space ] Decentralization
[ Submitter's Name ] Ellery Biddle
[ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Global Voices
[ Additional facilitators ]
What will happen in your session?
I'll begin this session with a quick presentation of Global Voices' research on Facebook's Free Basics initiative, wherein we tested their app in six different countries and evaluated against open internet and usability standards, as well as local needs and interests. We'll then use this as a model for brainstorming other decentralized usability and context-focused research projects where savvy tech users around the world can easily contribute experiential research and documentation to inquiries into the local and contextual efficacy of different ICT4D and low-connectivity focused tech innovations.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
Build a sustainable model through which tech savvy users can contribute to the growing body of global knowledge about the benefits and drawbacks of different innovations in places where internet access is scarce.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
Unfortunately we didn't think this session was quite right for the Digital Inclusion space this year. I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.
