[ Session Name ] Getting started as a Mentor [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Jessica Rose [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] FutureLearn [ Submitter's Github ] jessicarose

What will happen in your session?

This session is designed to give attendees with limited to no experience in mentorship the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to begin mentoring in their technology and open web communities as an individual mentor or through established mentorship programs. Short activities will be used to learn about best practices in onboarding new mentees and working with them to develop goals. Content focusing on how to support mentees through successes and setbacks, the ethical responsibilities of mentorship and sourcing mentee feedback will be addressed during this session. We will also look at how and when a mentor relationship may have to end and how best to sunset the relationship.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This session should provide attendees with the information and confidence to serve as mentors the technology and open web communities either as individuals or as part of an established mentorship program. Attendees should understand their responsibilities and boundaries as mentors. Attendees will know how to determine and rank the goals of their mentees, how to set goals in mentorship and how and when to sunset a relationship with a mentee productively. This should allow attendees without any experience in mentorship to begin acting as mentors and supporting individuals within their communities in an informed fashion.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

A projector and some office supplies (paper, pens) for notes would be very helpful for this session.

If there's any way to not book this on the Sunday, that would be massively helpful for me in being able to also cover another volunteer opportunity!
