[ Session Name ] Queering Privacy through Queer Hacking [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Decentralization

[ Submitter's Name ] Sarah Lewis [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Mascherari Press [ Submitter's Github ] @s-rah

What will happen in your session?

After a brief introduction to the multiple challenges that queer (lgbtq+) people face trying to discover information, find partners and simply exist online there will be a guided group discussion on how we can build & leverage existing technologies to make the connected world more queer friendly.

We will explore topics such as the risks of queer online dating, censorship of LGBT educational content and the harm of real name polices and the group discussion will center around how we subvert & reduce these risks.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

I want participants to go away with a deeper understanding of the challenges of designing systems with queer people in mind. Often well meaning, but naive, solutions to real problems (e.g. harassment) end up also harming queer communities the most and once we understand that not only can be we make the lives of queer people better, but we can also improve the internet for everyone.

I am hoping the group discussion unearths some clever solutions that participants can take forward also.

Time needed

90 mins

@s-rah the Privacy and Security team have advanced your proposal to our next phase of deliberation. Yisss!!!

I've personally invited you to propose a session, but as a matter of fairness and transparency to all applicants I must now enquire on your position with the stipend request. We're rather limited this time around and we're almost certain to get to the point of declining some great proposals due to this. If we were unable to provide you with a stipend, would there be any possibility of you still attending Mozfest?

s-rah commented 6 years ago

Sadly not, while much of my travel to/around Europe in October is covered by other conferences/events attending Mozfest would require me staying in the UK for many extra days after the last covered event & I would not be able to afford to do that without a stipend.

Hey thanks @s-rah, I appreciate your understanding. Mozfest is mostly run on string, cardboard, glitter, and real strong coffee. I do hope you get to check it out. Some of our team are unavailable this week so bear with with us.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your session proposal has been accepted.

@s-rah please look out for the email I just sent which contains a request for further information from you. I need this information by September 6.

Confirming receipt of email requested information.

Hope you're well @s-rah? Listen we're handling ticketing confirmation for each session this week. So so close now! Just wanted to confirm with you, you're holding this session on your own? Correct?

s-rah commented 6 years ago

Yup just me.

Thanks for getting back so rapido. Confirming ticketing lockdown! (Sorry the incessant pings but half of them are to communicate to the team across 4 timezones)
