[ Session Name ] Crowd2Map global village: putting the World on the map [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Janet Chapman [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Tanzania Development Trust [ Submitter's Github ] janetchapman

What will happen in your session?

The Crowd2Map (www.crowd2map.org) project team, in collaboration with the Missing Maps (www.missingmaps.org), will run a mapping zone throughout the weekend, training participants to map using OpenStreetMap (OSM). We will help the participants to register on OSM & train them in mapping and finding the relevant resources. All age groups will be equally involved. We will explain the importance of open data in creating a comprehensive map of the World, as well as why & how OpenStreetMap data will always remain open. We will make the participants aware of how maps help support development in different parts of the world, particularly in Tanzania, where the Crowd2Map project is based.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The main goal of the session is to make more people aware of OpenStreetMap (OSM), and how can everyone make a difference by mapping. The participants will leave the session having learnt to do mapping on OSM, and able to train their friends & colleagues. They will be able to edit & improve the maps in their local area, wherever in the world that is. Festival goers will also gain an understanding of how open data is significant in the context of geographic information. They will find out how entire communities can be put on the map entirely by volunteer effort, with minimal skills. Our research on how better maps impact development in rural Tanzania will also be disseminated.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Just a projector & office supplies.

Time needed

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

The Privacy and Security have decided to not take your proposal @janetchapman. I've removed the milestone so other spaces are now free to consider it.

Thanks @bunnybooboo we are also going to collaborate with @millzpaugh and on your suggestion I have applied for the Open Leaders scheme - fingers crossed!

Ooh amazing @janetchapman! I think you'd be perfect for that. Pinging @acabunoc to openly throw my support behind your application.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.

Hi @janetchapman , my name is Kasia and I work on Mozilla’s Internet Health Report. At Mozfest we will be present with an “Internet Research Hub” #618 (last comment) - an easy-going, cozy space for discussions and networking both with us about Internet Health and among researchers themselves.

We also invite anyone who does work in an Internet research field to sign up and present their work at a couple of open display tables we will have in the hub. We will promote these sessions throughout the festival. You can do it spontaneously with pen and paper on site or if you would like to save a spot beforehand, drop me an email at kasia@mozillafoundation.org with a short description of the session.

In any case, I would like to invite you to pass by the Hub and say hi. We will start with an informal "Research and coffee grinder” get-together at the beginning of the festival where people can get to know each other. Space and exact schedule for the Hub are still being decided and I will update you once we know the details. Hope to see you there!
