What will happen in your session?

For better or for worse, stories shape the course of technological development. We want to create more intelligent and nuanced stories about Artificial Intelligence, that break away from the simplistic utopia vs dystopia tropes we see in the media.

This session will bring together Machine Learning and AI experts with creative storytellers and script writers. Together, they will create new scripts telling stories about AI, robotics and the future of technology that reflect real-world opportunities and fears.

We will start with a short presentation outlining the goal and the problem we want to solve, before holding an interactive writing workshop with facilitators.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence recently held a conference on AI and had a full day dedicated to analysing AI narratives in the media. Terminator and skynet references vastly dominate the conversation about AI, despite the fact that those who work in the field have very different concerns.

We need stories that highlight real AI concerns (algorithmic bias, corporate transparency, inequality, the paperclip maximiser, the alignment problem etc) as well as genuine visions of the benefits for humanity (new economic models, post-scarcity society, advances in healthcare etc)

Our goal is to create stories based on fact that can positively shape the development of AI for the benefit of humanity.

This proposal has progressed to our next phase of deliberation! We will be following up shortly.

Unfortunately, due to the high number of proposals we received, we've decided to prioritise humans over machines in this year's Digital Inclusion space so although this is a great proposal we can't accept it this year. I'm removing the milestone to allow other spaces to consider your proposal.
