What will happen in your session?

The underlying frames, or agendas, in news can be hard to see. At Global Voices, we’ve created a journalism platform called NewsFrames (https://newsframes.globalvoices.org) to help make this easier. It enables people to write stories together on news coverage in ways that incorporates data, analytical methods, and bridge-building perspectives.

Some data that NewsFrames incorporates is from Media Cloud (mediacloud.org) and from an experimental library of algorithms from Georgia Institute of Technology that we’re calling “Bias Detector.” Our session will show how these tools can enable collaborative writing about frames or agenda setting in news coverage.

Because NewsFrames is new and still undergoing some development, we also welcome feedback from the participants that can inform its use and future.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

After this session, participants should understand how to write an article that compares different dominant themes in news coverage by different outlets like this one: https://newsframes.globalvoices.org/2017/07/07/what-does-the-media-say-is-happening-in-venezuela/.

In addition, participants will have experience in a new, open software platform that encourages best practices and enables collaboration in news authorship.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We will require a computer with internet/wifi connection and projector to demo the software. In addition, if there are not a lot of participants, those attending can bring their laptop/tablet with a connection to participate actively in the session.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.

Hello Let me get a meeting in the diary for us in two weeks and we can discuss more

connieimdialog commented 7 years ago

perfect, thanks!

Saallen commented 7 years ago

@connieimdialog confirming you don't need any additional tech than already outlined above?

connieimdialog commented 7 years ago

@Saallen thanks! i was just wondering if there will be stickies and a writing surface/flip-chart paper that i can grab? I know that the Faciliator's Guide says they will be available on each floor, but wasn't sure if that's also the Library space. Thanks!

connieimdialog commented 7 years ago

and also assuming that session participants can try and logon to the wifi? but also know i have to come up with a back-up no tech plan!

Saallen commented 7 years ago

Yes, they come as standard in each space. I would have a no wifi plan....always worth a plan b :)
