[ Session Name ] Wearable Tech Innovation [ Primary Space ] Youth Zone

[ Submitter's Name ] Rachel Wong [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Konichiwakitty

What will happen in your session?

I started learning about electronics in March 2017. I am a stem cell scientist currently doing a PhD to understand congenital blindness. Many children I've met have been awe to know that you can be a complete nerd/geek but still be fashionable. I would like to share my work and background to inspire children to pursue STEM careers, but also want to open the pathways towards cross-disciplinary research (science, tech & art). I am looking to reveal my konichiwakitty e-fashion collection of at least 5 complete outfits (including accessories like gloves, hats, bags, umbrellas, jewellery and shoes) on the day. Perhaps a fashion show might be more attractive but I would need to recruit some human beings!

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This is the first time I will be showcasing my entire collection so I'd like to be able to do it at the Science Fair on Friday. I think it's the best environment for people to come up and ask questions and have a more personal one-to-one conversation. I hope that wearable tech will gain more exposure and through this i could get some funding to expand my collection and ideas. I wish to break the stereotype and show the younger generation that you can be intelligent and also fashionable. Besides that, I also want to show that you can do anything you like (and more than one thing at a time) if you really have the passion for it.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

I would require some (5 or less) mannequins or a clothes rail to put up my wearable tech/clothing. Also some tables to display my electronic accessories would be great. If the admin deciding committee thinks that a fashion show would be the best idea, I will try to request for models via the social network but might need additional help finding 5 ladies of size UK8/10.

Time needed

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

@Saallen could you advise on this session please? cc/ @msaunby

EPIKhub commented 6 years ago

I had a chat with @msaunby, consensus is this session would best fit in the digital inclusion space - I will change the milestone to reflect that conversation. cc/ @Saallen

Hey- super interesting proposal We can certainly get you mannequins to display your wearable tech/clothing so it can be displayed all weekend- I would also advise having set times outlined so ppl can come up and ask questions and learn more about the process and the technology

konichiwakitty commented 6 years ago

Hi, it would be INCREDIBLE if i can have mannequins that includes head to toe as I have pieces such as hats, gloves, shoes and even accessories like belts, bags and an umbrella! I would like to be by the wearable tech or have someone be with it all weekend just to keep an eye on things but would be happy to have a Q&A session. This is also my first time publicly revealing my pieces and having an exhibition so any mentorship or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Saallen commented 6 years ago

Hello @konichiwakitty, unfortunately, we don't have mannequines that include head to toe- but we can search for something when the time comes đź‘—

konichiwakitty commented 6 years ago

@Saallen well a mannequin is better than none! I'm sure I can make it work. If I can't get the accessories on the mannequin, I'll just display them on a table instead. Any chance that I could reserve 5 mannequins?

Also, does all weekend include the science festival on Friday? Would be great if I could be a part of the science festival as I already know some friends bringing children who would be turning up that evening!

msaunby commented 6 years ago

I think we should be able to source human beings if mannequins are in short supply.

@Saallen This could be a great fit for the science fair.

konichiwakitty commented 6 years ago

It would be ideal if I could display or exhibit at the science fair as I feel it would be the best way for me to personally speak to those whom are interested and answer questions.

I should state that I am no longer available to exhibit on the Saturday but can do Friday and/or Sunday. Thank you!

kenyatta1 commented 6 years ago

@konichiwakitty Unfortunately, we didn't feel this session quite fit within the Digital Inclusion space this year, so I'm removing the milestone but it looks like @Saallen agrees that this could be great for the science fair!

konichiwakitty commented 6 years ago

@kennyata1 the science fair would be perfect. I am wondering when would I know about the decision for this? Thank you.

konichiwakitty commented 6 years ago

(I think I may have forgotten to mention in the proposal but) I am using various microcontrollers including the Raspberry Pi, Adafruit Circuit Playground, the latest adafruit trinket, the BBC micro:bit and #update I will be receiving sponsored onion IoT and Japanese IchigoJam in the mail soon for incorporating into my wearables!

Saallen commented 6 years ago

Hello @konichiwakitty lets say yes to exhibiting at the science fair. So you will just be showcasing your wears on the Friday night from 6pm-9pm. We will be in touch in 2 weeks with further updates Looking forward to collaborating together

Hi @konichiwakitty , my name is Kasia and I work on Mozilla’s Internet Health Report. At Mozfest we will be present with an “Internet Research Hub” #618 (last comment) - an easy-going, cozy space for discussions and networking both with us about Internet Health and among researchers themselves.

We also invite anyone who does work in an Internet research field to sign up and present their work at a couple of open display tables we will have in the hub. We will promote these sessions throughout the festival. You can do it spontaneously with pen and paper on site or if you would like to save a spot beforehand, drop me an email at kasia@mozillafoundation.org with a short description of the session.

In any case, I would like to invite you to pass by the hub and say hi. We will start with an informal "Research and coffee grinder” get-together at the beginning of the festival where people can get to know each other. Space and exact schedule for the Hub are still being decided and I will update you once we know the details. Hope to see you there!
