[ Session Name ] Data-Based Digitally Inclusive Storytelling for Communities to Counter Incomplete or Incorrect Narratives in the Media [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Connie Moon Sehat [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Global Voices [ Submitter's Github ] @connieimdialog

What will happen in your session?

We will share a new element to Rising Voices' digital inclusion work through a new collaborative project with NewsFrames. In our pilot project, we will show how we have been working side-by-side with indigenous communities in Ecuador to collaboratively analyze data generated from the Media Cloud platform to better understand whether the narratives found in the media about these communities or issues important are being portrayed, misrepresented or ignored altogether. In addition, we have been working closely with these communities to model a new type of storytelling working with them to produce their own digital media responding to these data-based findings.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We would like attendees to have a better understanding how data can play a role in storytelling by marginalized communities. (example: https://newsframes.globalvoices.org/2017/07/22/in-the-depths-of-the-ecuadorian-amazon-digital-communications-aid-the-process-of-self-determination/) By sharing a concrete example of how we have been working with our pilot project communities through outreach, data analysis, and training, attendees will determine how a similar model may work with communities with whom they work. Following the presentation, we will provide plenty of time to invite feedback from attendees to help discuss challenges in this model or identify opportunities for creating a curriculum that can be utilized by others both as a self-guided or directed resource.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

@RisingVoices I'm seeking clarity on your stipend request. Your proposal has made it through to the next phase of consideration by the Digital Inclusion wrangler team. Unfortunately though, we've got way more seeking stipends than we have access to. If we were unable to give you access to a stipend, might you have other means available to you to make it to Mozfest? If you would like we can also have this conversation via email.

@risingvoices Thank you for your patience! We had an extremely high volume of sessions for the digital inclusion space! We're excited to inform you that your session has been accepted to Mozfest. We hope you're able to join us in London from Oct 27-29. However, we cannot provide a travel stipend. Please let us know if you are able to secure alternative travel funding before the end of September.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest. Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and we will follow up on email very soon.
