What will happen in your session?

We will give a brief introduction about the development from truly free content in the very early days of the internet to the wide-spread ad-dependency that funds online content today. Subscription models are technically and privacy-wise a better option but impose massive hurdles (and cost) to users. Flattr is a system that allows everyone on the web to make and / or receive small payments for the content they publish / consume. We want to discuss with the MozFest participants how such a system can become successful and how less "internet-affine" web users can be brought on board.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We want to further educate about the negative impacts of the dependency on advertising not only in journalism, but all across the web, email-providers, dating sites, YouTube channels... From the discussion, we expect valuable feedback about alternative funding models and how they can become succesful. We will collect the feedback and make it accessible to all participants.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Users with devices (preferably laptops) will be sufficient!
