[ Session Name ] Exploring privacy in virtual reality: Porton Down [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security

[ Submitter's Name ] Callum Cooper

What will happen in your session?

This project will put the user into a sensationalist Virtual Reality game where their intimate data is not only presented but used against them.

The participant is encouraged to do a series of cognitive tests. Once the the first series of cognitive tests is completed the benevolent voice congratulates the subject/player and announces the next level. The subject repeats each test but now the VR systems manipulates their perception. This manipulation is hallucinatory in it’s nature. The user/players senses are increasingly distorted.

By the final level, the tests descend into absurdity where the user/player is unable to achieve what should be a simple task.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

To entertain, and to create debate and discussion around the unexplored topic of privacy within virtual worlds.

When completed, users receive a visualisation of all the data that has been collected throughout the subject/players engagement with the game. The report not only lists information about their physical body such as height and arm length but also more invasive information about their movement in the space during the game. The report also presents their level of engagement, concentration, agility and things that they have said with a sentiment analysis. Each of the user/players results are anonymously compares to each other. This report also gives a list all the data points that can be mined by VR systems.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We will provide our own HTC Vive system.
