What will happen in your session?

Making use of tactile, arts based materials, participants will be invited to 'unmask their online reality'.Social Media plays a huge role in who we are, both on and off the web, and through the creation of an art instillation who we are on and offline will be presented. Using plain white masks as the template, we're asking attendees to deface their mask using Sharpie markers, creating a version of the identity they aim to portray online. Then, with permission, they will be filmed in 3D wearing the mask (a simple 360 headshot), the the aim to include both digital imagery (as immersive an VR experience of others' identities) and each mask in a physical art instillation/group exhibition.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Highlight to attendees and MozFest community the extent to which we reconstruct our reality online, provoking thought. Discuss whether this is a good thing. If we always portray how we want to be seen, and whether the relative anonymity of this, coupled with the pressures of social media, changes how we interact. instillation and group exhibition - highlights a sense of community, bringing together the best intentions of identity online, and identity through face-to-face interaction. I hope to create a fun and inclusive space for all to share their thoughts and get creative, a skill valued across all sectors, whilst provoking thoughts and questions about the pressures social media place upon an individual and their reactions to that.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Sharpie permanent markers in a variety of colours, a number of plain white masks with elastics for hanging, a space to hang the masks and a means to do so (I can however work this out on the day if necessary). Tables and chairs, 360 degree camera, HTC Vive/google cardboard.
